I am a 24 year old working in NYC at a software start up with industry focus in spa/salon and fitness. I am passionate about fitness, clean eating and plan to open a healthy food truck someday! My family and friends are my world and backbone.

Who has inspired you the most to succeed as a Figure Competitor

My trainer, MalennaSaunders, hands down. I can’t believe I’ve already competed in two fitness competitions, something I never had any intention of ever doing. All of this stemmed from meeting Malenna through Phoeynx Fitness, a boot camp in NYC.

After learning that Malenna competed and she wanted to gather a team to not only help but also have us eat and train as if we were getting stage ready too, I was definitely intrigued. I love competition and a challenge so I was on board. Without her ongoing support, knowledge and passion, I certainly wouldn’t be the competitor I am today. I would never have gotten this far without her.

What Figure Competitions have you made appearances in. What were your placements?

My first competition as a Figure Competitor was with Fitness America Muscle Mania on October 27, 2012 in Astoria, NY. At this show I competed in both figure and bikini.

As a Figure Competitor, I placed first, took overall and also received my pro card. In bikini, I placed second. My second competition was with WBFF on November 3, 2012 in Providence, Rhode Island. In this show, I competed in both Diva Fit Model and Diva Bikini. In Diva Fit Model, I placed second and received my pro card. In Diva Bikini, I placed 7th.

When is your next upcoming show? What will be your competing class?

My next show is in April 2013. I will be competing in Diva Fit Model.

Laura Dyck – National Figure Athlete

Please read more about Laura.

Can you please share with the readers your background and interests?

I am a 40 year old mother of two beautiful girls, Madison (10) and Sophie (8).  On top of being a full-time Mom, I am also a part-time physiotherapist at Kelowna General Hospital.  I have always enjoyed leading a healthy and active lifestyle. I figure skated competitively for 12 years which consumed most of my childhood but taught me self-discipline, self-confidence and the ability to laugh at myself.  Watching old videos of yourself will do that!!  My most current passions involve lifting weights, playing hockey, snowboarding, skate skiing, rock climbing as well as biking, hiking and running.  I am also helping to coach my daughter’s triathlon club and am always amazed and inspired by my girls strength, determination and energy.  They keep me young and make me want to be a mom that they can look up to and be proud of.

Who has inspired you the most to succeed as a Figure Competitor?

The amazing women like Monica Brant and Jamie Eason who grace the covers of Oxygen magazine.  I have had the privilege to train with Monica Brant at her F.E.M. Camps last September in Marina Del Rey and again in Kelowna this July.  This woman is so extremely passionate and motivating about fitness and reaching your goals. Her drive, dedication and discipline are contagious and she is not only beautiful on the outside but radiates pure joy and strength from the inside as well.  My other source of inspiration is my husband.  He sees all of the things in me that I can’t and believes in me on the days that I can’t believe in myself.  He always builds me up and never lets me quit.  He is my rock!

What competitions have you made appearances in, and what titles have you won?

Nov 2011 –     Sandra Wickham Fall Classic –

Open Figure A 5th place

Masters Figure A 6th place

When is your next upcoming show and what will be your competing class?

I started training for my first show less than a year ago and I never expected  to do more than one show let alone make it all the way to Nationals!  Right now it is time to digest all that has happened in the last year, spend time enjoying these last lazy days of summer with my wonderful husband and kids and enjoy my training for the pure joy it brings me.  Never say never though, you might just see my smiling face back on the National stage next year.

Toby Tannas – Figure Athlete

Please read more about Toby.

Could you please tell our readers your background and interests?

I am a 36 year old mother of two daughters.  Life is busy!  In addition to keeping up with my children, I am a Global Television News Anchor and I own a small clothing boutique.  I am also a wife to a loving and thankfully very supportive husband.

Who inspired you the most to become a figure competitor?

I am just at the beginning of my ‘figure competitor’ journey.  I have admired many women, some who I know and some who I see only in magazines.  I admire anyone with the discipline required of this sport and after completing my first competition am happy to count myself among these women.

What competitions have you made appearances in and what placements have you achieved?

I just competed in the 2012 Western Canadians in Kelowna.   I placed 5th in the Figure ‘D’ category.

What is your next upcoming show and competing class?

I am currently planning out my schedule.  I’m looking at the IDFA Show in Calgary this October, as well as the Sandra Wickham Fall Classic in Vancouver in November.  Beyond that, who knows…just one step at a time!  I am working at putting on some muscle right now!

Sally Rotlisberger – NPAA Figure Athlete

After just 3 competitions, Sally received her Pro Card in Figure through the IDFA. She will be continuing her figure career with the new NPAA Organization (Natural Physique and Athletic Organization)

Please read more about Sally.

Can you share with our readers your background and interests?

I am an executive assistant at an oil and gas company in Calgary, AB. When I’m not at work, you can find me at the gym, snowboarding, downhill mountain biking or keeping up with at very rambunctious pug. I enjoy being active and living a healthy lifestyle.

Who has inspired you the most to succeed as a Figure Competitor?

I was looking for a new challenge but didn’t know what I wanted to do. While at a mountain bike camp I discovered that my coach had entered a fitness competition a few months before the camp. She told me all about the experience and encouraged me to give it a try. After some research, I found a trainer, Dr. Wendy Ashby. Wendy guided me through the process, making it a really fun experience. After my first competition I was hooked. Wendy has been a great inspiration and has always believed in me, even when at times, I doubted myself.

What competitions have you made appearances in and what were your placements?

2010 – May, IDFA, Calgary – Novice Figure 2nd place

2011 – May, IDFA, Calgary – Open Figure 3rd place

2011 – October, IDFA, Calgary – Open Figure 1st place Overall (received Pro Card)

When is your next upcoming show and what will be your competing class?

I will compete in two competitions this year:

May 12, INBF. Category – Ms Fit

Sept 30, NPAA. Category – Figure

What is your current nutritional plan in preparation for a competition, and what supplements do you take when in contest prep?

I’m sure my nutrition plan is similar to other competitors. I eat several small meals spread throughout the day. I supplement with BCAA and multi vitamins. I try to keep it simple.

What’s your weekly Training Split like?

I lift weights approx 5 days per week.

What’s your Cardio Schedule like during competition prep?

I generally do cardio (30-45 min) in the morning. This is when I practice my posing as well.

What techniques do you employ to best prepare you for a competition?

Stage presence is really important. I have two left feet so I really need to practice until I’m comfortable with everything. Its one less thing to worry about when you’re on stage and you can just have fun and enjoy the moment. As for carb cutting and drying out … I leave that up to my trainer to tell me what’s best. I think that the last week should be really personalized to each individual.
