Robin Edwards – Figure Athlete

I recently met Robin backstage at one of my shows. Although she just began competing, she has already brought home top placings. Watch for her in 2012 as she competes for her Pro card in SNBF Figure.

Tell us a little about yourself:
I’m 30 years old and a lucky wife to a very supportive husband who has encouraged me throughout this journey. I work full-time for an engineering firm in Atlanta and I’m also a part-time wedding photographer. I’m a part-time student as well majoring in IT at Southern Polytechnic University.

What competitions have you done?
I competed in two SNBF figure competitions in 2010.

My first competition in Oct I won 1st place Novice Figure and Novice overall. I also won 1st place in Figure Open.

In Nov I placed 2nd in  SNBF Open figure.

What inspired you to become a Figure Athlete?
I’ve always loved fitness and being in shape. In 2009, I decided to take 6 months off training and dieting to try and get my head wrapped around school and spend some time with my new puppy. In that time, I foolishly thought that taking the time off wouldn’t hurt my body much since I thought I had a good handle on how to eat. Well needless to say, after 6 months, I gained 30lbs, which seemed so gradual that I barely noticed until I started seeing pictures of myself. Then I had to do an entire wardrobe revamp because I didn’t own a single pair of pants that fit. When I went shopping I realized that I more than doubled my normal pants size and I decided at that moment this was the end me letting myself go. This was the end of me waking up every day and saying, tomorrow I will start back to the gym. I wasn’t happy. I was always sick, and it was affecting everything in my life. So in February of 2010 I started back training and in May I met a great Nutritionist/Trainer Adele Amor with Amor Fitness and Nutrition. I always thought I knew how to eat right. I know good food choices from bad foods, so why see a nutritionist? Even when I used to take all the classes at our local gym 6 days a week I never fully had the body I wanted, which was one of a Figure competitor. I thought that you had to be born with that kind of body and I could get the weight off, but I just don’t have an athletic build and never will. My coach told me, I could have that body, I just had to be aggressive and do everything she told me to do. And I did! I love a challenge! I worked hard, ate more food than I thought was possible and watched the weight melt off while building more muscle than I ever had before! After 8 months I lost 40 lbs and I’ve never felt better! And by keeping myself surrounded by people that inspire me on a daily basis, I now more than ever want to stay on this road to a healthy lifestyle.

Any advice you would like to share?
You can always benefit from getting a coach or finding someone to help you achieve your goals. I was very skeptical because I thought I could do it all myself. The bottom line, even though I wasn’t eating badly, I wasn’t eating right for my body type. By being held accountable and having bi weekly meetings with my nutritionist, we figured out how my body reacts to foods and she was able to tweak my diet to get the best possible results. Also, if you fall off the wagon and put on some pounds..…So what!!!!!! It’s not the end of the world. Pick yourself up, dust off and try again! If you want it bad enough, you can have it and you WILL make the time for it!
