How to achieve your goals!

Today’s article is going to explore goals, goal setting and look at the reasons why people often fail.

I think it’s fair to say that at one time or another we have all set ourselves a goal and failed at it. Sometimes this is because the goal was unrealistic but more often than not it is because although the goal was achievable, the steps and processes needed to get there were not well planned, followed or executed properly.

Let’s think of this another way for a moment: you want to make a chocolate cake with butter crème icing. You have all the ingredients and the recipe book and the oven, but instead of opening the packets, weighing the ingredients, shelling the eggs and mixing everything thoroughly before placing it in the oven, you just dump everything in a bowl (packaging, shell, you-name it, it’s going in!) you don’t stir it, and then you put it in the oven and burn it to a crisp, that’s going to be one disgusting cake! This doesn’t mean that you will always be a failure at baking cakes, it just means that you need to change your approach and follow a number of smaller steps to get to the end result that you want.

It’s about taking things one step at a time and doing everything properly.

The 2 main goals that I find within the fitness community or those first stating out are the following:

1)       Weight loss

2)       Muscle gain

These are both similar in the fact that they require long-term work to achieve but it is easy to become despondent.

To achieve your goals look at the bigger picture first: what is your ultimate dream / goal? “I want to be a Pro Bikini Model”.

Once you have set that initial goal ask yourself how you need to get there? What qualifications / wins / shows do you need to achieve / complete or compete in to be eligible to become a pro?

Look at people who have already achieved your goals. Compare yourself. You need to become your own biggest critic. Look at the stats of people competing at the level that you want to be. How do you measure up? If the leading atheletes have 32” busts, 28” hamstring / quad diameters, defined 6 pacs, then you need to compare that to yourself.
Set yourself a bi-weekly goal of 1/2 an inch loss or gain in your chosen area.
Keep a diary, record your achievements, comment on areas where you’re struggling.

The key thing is to be aware when something isn’t working. If something isn’t working you are wasting your time. That’s not to say you won’t achieve your goals, not at all, what I am saying is that you can’t keep doing the same thing and expect to see a different result.

If something isn’t working, tweak it, change it, try again. Keep a record of your changes and new things you are trying – but don’t change too many things at once!

Overall my advice would be your bigger picture is your motivation, the smaller steps are your goals that will get you to your bigger picture. What you do to achieve your goals are your tools. Make sure you have the right tools.

Candice Perfect – Rising Fitness Competitor & Bikini Sensation

Candice Perfect - Fitness and Bikini Competitor

Briefly share with us your background (Education, Interests, etc.)?

I am one of the most ambitious, dedicated, hardworking, reliable, go-getters you will ever meet. If I say I’m going to do something, I do it… and I do it right. I believe in putting your full effort into things, otherwise why waste your time?

Candice Perfect Bikini Competitor

I am a lifelong Alaskan resident but am moving to Los Angeles, California in July 2012 to pursue opportunities in the fitness industry and to obtain my Master’s of Public Health degree from UCLA. I graduated in 2011 from the University of Alaska Anchorage with various Honors such as: Magna Cum Laude, Departmental Honors, Leadership Honors, Seawolf Leader Award, Phi Kappa Phi, and Pi Sigma Alpha. I also managed to complete my Bachelor degree in 2 ½ years time!

I wrote my undergraduate senior thesis on the history of various public policies and the impact they have had on the food supply over the years which in turn has contributed to the increasing rates of obesity in the United States. My thesis also covered how various media influences and increasingly favorable portrayals of obesity have altered public perception of the epidemic. During my graduate studies at UCLA, I intend to conduct research similar to the topics in my undergraduate thesis.

My immediate goals in the fitness industry are to earn my IFBB Pro Card and make my pro debut before the end of 2012. Once I earn my Pro Card, I hope to qualify and compete at Olympia and the Arnold Classic. A couple of my longer term goals are to make a name for myself in the fitness industry as someone who is dedicated to helping people achieve their weight loss and fitness goals; I will be looking to build a clientele of people willing and motivated to make a healthy lifestyle change. I would also love the opportunity to become a spokesperson.

Although I’m still new to the industry, I am very creative and intend to own my own brand one day. I am all about self-promotion and have managed to earn several awards and titles within the last couple months.

Here are a couple of my most recent accomplishments:

  • FLEX Magazine Bikini Model Search Finalist, June 2012
  • Team EDGE Timeline Cover Model, June 2012
  • “Girl of the Month” on MuscleProdigy.com, June 2012
  • “Kandy Girl of the Week” in Kandy Magazine, May 2012
  • 2nd place, Physique of the Week Contest

Candice Perfect Fitness Competitor

I have also been lucky enough to be interviewed as a featured fitness competitor and bikini model on several well know fitness resource websites such as DualFit, Directly Fitness, Six Pack Factory, Trimmed and Toned, Fit Body Hype, and Figure Bikini.

Who has inspired you the most to succeed as a Fitness Competitor?

There are several people within the industry that I am inspired by and look to for motivation. The person who has inspired me the most however, is my coach from Team EDGE, Ingrid Romero.

I am a very driven, dedicated, and optimistic person with an excellent work ethic. It is rare that I find somebody with the same qualities that I can look to as a role model. Ingrid is not only a wonderful coach, but has become a great friend and someone that I admire as not only a force within the industry but also as a person.

What competitions have you made appearances in? From these, what were your
placements (titles won)?

  • 2nd place, 2012 NPC Los Angeles Amateur Grand Prix
  • 4th place, 2012 IRON MAN Magazine/LA FitExpo Naturally Bodybuilding Championships (my first show EVER!)

Roxanne Patricia – Bikini Athlete

Roxanne competed for the first time May 19th, and came in 2nd in her division! She had an amazing fitness journey losing a lot of weight along the way.
Please read more about Roxanne.
Can you please share with the readers your background and interests?
I was born and raised in Prince George and still live there. I went to UNBC where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, and a Bachelor of Education and I am now a teacher. I have played sports my entire life, and played varsity soccer while going to UNBC. I love to do anything that is active and challenges me, and in my spare time (when I have it) I love to read a good novel.
Who has inspired you the most to become a bikini competitor?
The person that inspired me first to become a fitness competitor is Jenna Servatius and Carol Lama. I had just finished University and was no longer playing varsity soccer and gained almost 30 pounds. I was looking for some inspiration and some guidance on how to lose the weight. My friend Jenna lost over 40 pounds doing a fitness competition and I figured hey I can do that too!!! As I started this journey I was fortunate to have two of the best trainers (Erin Moubray and Angelique Kronebusch) to inspire, and push me to places, I did not even think I could go to. My fiancé and friends have kept me motivated to keep going, and I could not have been so successful without all of these people.
What shows have you competed in, and what were your placements?
The BCABBA Western Canadians was the first competition that I have ever been in. I finished 2nd in bikini division D.
What will be your next competition and competing class?
My next show will be Provincials June 30th, 2012. I will be competing in the bikini division. I will be training hard for the next month, and hopefully with a little luck I can do as well as I did at the Western Canadians.
Where can fans find out more about you?
People can find out more about me on Facebook by adding Roxanne Patricia or see pictures from my competition on muscle insider http://muscle-insider.com/photos/unnamed-gallery-2

Katia Rice – Bikini Competitor

[facebooksimplelike]

I had the pleasure of meeting Katia about a year ago backstage at a competition. That was the night she won her class and overall. One look at her and you could tell she was clearly a winner. Read more about Katia …..

Tell the readers a little bit about yourself…

I am originally from Atlanta, Georgia and a graduate of Georgia Southern University. A freelance model and bikini competitor, I love to perform.  I am also a lover of the arts. Live jazz music, theatre plays, amusement parks, carnivals and roller skating are a few of my favorite things; and I think sundresses and flip flops are the absolute best! Health and fitness has become a major part of my life and I am committed to living a healthy, stress-free lifestyle.

What inspires you?
I am inspired by people who set goals and follow through. People often ask me about dieting and exercise, but very few people will actually execute a fitness plan. I am also inspired by my own results. When training for a show, my goal is to be better than I was in the previous show. The training is hard, the dieting is harder, but the sense of accomplishment once you have reached your goal makes it all worth it.

What shows have you done and what were the outcome?
SNBF Pro/Amateur Event (11/06/10)
Gainesville, GA – 5th Place Bikini Class

SNBF Georgia State Championships (04/09/11)
Atlanta, GA – 1st Place Bikini Short Class and Overall Bikini Champ

NPC Atlantic USA’s (03/17/12)
Atlanta, GA – 3rd Place Bikini Class A

What is next for you?
Right now I am focused on working with my trainer to make
improvements. I am committed to presenting a new and improved me each
and every time I grace the stage. You will see more of me in 2012!
I would like to thank my trainers Roc and Gina Shabazz and my Fitness
Pros family for their continued support. I would also like to thank
Celeste Hunt and Sabina Moise for introducing me to the world of
bodybuilding and fitness. I am so happy with what I have accomplished
thus far. I feel that I have accomplished so much in such a short
amount of time, and I plan to keep the momentum going. I am excited to
see what this season has in store for me. “In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” ~ Proverbs 3:6
