1. Briefly share with us your background (Education, Interests, etc.)?

I grew up in Northern Virginia outside Washington, DC. and went to Virginia Tech. Like most college students, I majored in communications because I had no idea what I wanted to be.

After college I worked at Ogilvy and Mather Public Affairs and got an eye opening lesson in business and professionalism. Most of my greatest lessons came from that period of time.

I married my high school sweetheart after a 2 year hiatus and we’ve been together ever since. His career as a Marine Corp pilot took us all over the country so I wanted a career I could “carry” with me and graphic design was perfect. I think most people don’t know that I’m an artist before anything else.

I had published journals, cards and calendars at Borders Books several years back. But when the publishing company I was working with was sold, I was out… and pregnant with my 2nd baby,  I took a break.

But once I had my darling daughter, I decided my goals was to look like I never had kids. Nothing made me happier than when people would look at the baby in the stroller and say, “is she yours?”

It was my nothing’s-gonna-stop-me-atude that drove towards the ultra fitness and ultimately my 3rd baby…SmashFit.

2. Who has inspired you the most to succeed as a Fitness Competitor?

To be honest, I wasn’t really inspired by anyone…wait…I take that back. When I saw Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2, I wanted those arms! I didn’t know how to get them, or that you even had to workout for them, but I decided that someday they would be mine!

The truth is, competing was a happy accident. I had struggled with weight and body image for much of my life and  battled eating disorders in high school and college. I don’t know why really. Even in hindsight, there was no good reason; my parents were wonderful, I had a lot of friends, but something inside didn’t feel right. And although I grew out of the destructive eating patterns as a young adult, the quest for my “perfection” never left.

It ebbed and flowed throughout the years as I would go through phases of working out and not. But I never had a grasp on the nutrition. I remember a time when I thought chicken nuggets had health because they had chicken in them… ah yes…. the lessons we learn.

My turning point really happened after my 2nd baby. I decided that I would not live in my baby-body and I would do things the right way this time. I picked up some issues of Oxygen and Muscle Hers, and Wow… something to shoot for!

I had no idea this was a competitive sport until I met my good friend Sheri who was a Figure Pro Competitor and had an incredible physique. As I interrogated her on what I needed to do to look like her, she said, “you should try competing.”” In what?, I said. “Figure,” she said. You mean, getting in the best shape of your life is a sport?? I’m in!

And so began my journey.

3. What competitions have you made appearances in? From these, what were your placements (titles won)?

My biggest competition year was 2007 where my highest achievement was winning first in both the Open and Masters at the Anna Level Championships. I also placed in the top 10 at Jr. Nationals in 2009.

  • 2006 South Florida District Championships – 2nd in the Open
  • 2007 Sunshine Classic – 3rd in the Open
  • 2007 Anna Level Figure and Fitness Championships – 1st in the Masters and 3rd in the Open
  • 2007 Southern States – 6th place in the Open
  • 2007 Gold Cup/Zena Collins Figure Fitness – 1st in the Open, and 1st in the Masters
  • Jr. Nationals 2008
  • Jr. Nationals 2009 top 10.

4. When is your next upcoming show? What will be your competing class?

I’m shooting to compete in the fall, but now that SmashFit is rolling, I have many business obligations and travel might interfere. I always try to keep myself close to competition ready so that I can get those last few pounds off relatively quickly if I need to.

If I get the chance to compete, I would be competing in the open, “A class” – the little people class I call it, since I’m only 5ft.

5. Where can fans find out more about you (website, published magazines, etc.)?

People can come explore the SmashFit site (SmashFit.com). You’ll find my bio, photos, and a clip from my TV show “Miami Moms”.  I’m also working on speaking engagements and will be appearing in the January issue of SELF Magazine sharing a super upper-body workout!

But  you can always find me in my social networks talking fitness and life. I love connecting with cool and like-minded people. Find me on Facebook, the SmashFit Page at Facebook, Twitter and at Google+. Feel free to “wave”.
